Work in Progress Wednesday: Holiday Decorating

I really struggle with the whole concept of decorating my house for the holidays.  I know it shouldn't be that hard, but I think it has its challenges.  Challenge #1 is that is requires more stuff.  I am more of an "everything all over the place" than an "everything in its place" person.  So the idea of adding more stuff to the place makes me a little nervous.  This challenge was eradicated by my former intern Kaleigh (you remember her)

Hi Kaleigh!

Kaleigh informed me that when decorating for the holidays, you put your normal, every day decorations in the box the holiday decorations came out of, then when its over, bring them back out.  I know this should have been obvious, but it was seriously a light bulb moment for me.

Challenge #2 is how to arrange it.  I read a lot of crafting blogs and you should see the way these people claim their houses look all the time.  I mean were do you eat dinner if your table looks like this?

Where does one get so many pumpkins?

Where do you put all your piles of mail and bills?

Or your purse and all the other random bags that go on tables like these?

After reading enough blogs and looking at enough pictures, I realized a pattern.  That I could just group things together as opposed to spread it out everywhere, add touches here or there, and use things I already had.  These revelations lead me to create a little bit of Halloween that actually looked good.  I was rather proud of myself when I came up with the idea to add the Harry Potter books from the shelf into all of the Harry Potter Decorations I had from my teaching days.

I threw in the an owl candle (Hedwig) I'd bought the week before on a whim and a plastic glass I must have had from a Philadelphia party (it could totally double as the goblet of fire).

Then I took the rest of the owls, some randoms pairs of pumpkins and flowers, and some candle sticks from a wedding, bunched them all together and placed them in a couple of spaces in the room.

It's not a master piece, and this won't turn into a "decor" blog anytime soon.  But it's Work In Progress, and it's Wednesday.  So here you go!

Happy Halloween!

Small City Big Traffic Changes

Tomorrow's the day many have feared for months.  "It will never work" they said.  Others add "It will slow down the system."  Most worry about their neighbors "They will never figure it out, there isn't enough information."  Despite the months of preparation, the signs and public information and the small changes that have occurred to get us ready for this date, people still are not prepared for the change.  Yet tomorrow, October 1st, 2013 the change comes.  No, I'm not talking about "Obamacare." What we have here is far more serious than that.  Tomorrow, our Small City with a Big Heart becomes a Small City with 2 Way Streets.

This post started as a pep talk to my fellow Amsterdamians.  Around here we tend to think we can't until we do and then we still aren't sure if we can. But driving around town the other day I realized we manage to get around town safely against all odds.  If a person can zoom across Church Street from Widow Susan to Clizbe Ave  at rush hour and not share the same fate as Susan's husband, then surely a change to a two way traffic system in the center of town shouldn't be a problem.  If one of the safest intersections in the city contains 5 corners, 6 entrances and 4 stop signs and 2 gas stations then I know we Amsterdamians can follow the signs, traffic signals and road paint in the area formerly known as "downtown."

In fact, here in Amsterdam we have a traffic patterns only locals can understand.   And the problem with that is we want more than locals on our roads.  There are driving laws and then there are what I'd like to call Amsterdam's "Driving Mores" that are passed down from our grandparents to our parents to us.  Or from our High School Gym/Drivers Ed Teacher if you are transplant.  The best example I can think of has to with the fact that here in Amsterdam, you can walk up hill to school both ways.

Traffic More #1 - When it comes to hills, all bets are off.
Take Locust Ave and Lyon St.  This harmless 4 way intersection has a traffic light during nice weather, but once winter comes and cars need a running start up Lyon Street hill, the light turns to a 3 way red and 1 way yellow blinking light.  There is no sign that depicts this, no mass facebook message or public alert.  But everyone who lives around there just "knows." Just like they "know" Kreisel Terrace hill is closed in winter and that the seemingly pointless stop signs on Major Lane (between Northampton and Brandt on your way to the Middle School) will in fact keep you from getting T-Boned by the cars that need a running start in the best of weather to get up those hills.

Traffic More #2 - No matter how long you've lived here, you will get lost in your own town.
When I moved to Rockton, it was like a whole new world.  I searched for the Rockton Y for a while until I found out it was not a building but an intersection.  I am still not sure how to tell an out of town friend how to get through it and still stay on Clizbe, I usually just ask them to describe their surroundings when they call completely lost.  Then there is the fact that you cannot enter and leave the South Side in the same spot and still get back from where you came. At best, you'll  have to turn around at the Amsterdam Recorder, at worse, you'll end up on the Thruway.

Traffic More #3 - Things just don't make logical sense.
The Golf Course is not on Golf Course Road and you can't get to The Mall by taking The Mall.  But you can drive through the Tecler Elementary School Parking lot to get to Hagaman and St. John Street does cut through a Church Parking Lot, but that church is not called St. John's but Mt Carmel, and if its Sunday, watch out for old people.

So yes, we understand traffic a little differently here in Amsterdam. Many of our rules are not set in stone, just passed down through stories or trial and error.  But we can survive and even thrive during this traffic change.  We know more about state traffic laws than we give ourselves credit for.  After all, how many out-of-towners would confidently turn left on red from a one way to a one way right in front of a police station? On October 1st and beyond I challenge you to leave a little earlier, be a little more patient and drive a bit more defensively.  Show those two way streets whose boss and make these changes.  And if all else fails, listen to the advice of your Gym/Driver's Ed Teachers Mr. Mee and Ms. Nev: always leave yourself an out and stay out of the no zone.

Work in Progress Wednesday - That Time I Broke Up With Running

Remember, that one time at band camp?  Since I tell so many stories about myself (just ask my coworkers) I've been compared to the Band Camp Girl on more than one occasion (for story telling reasons only, I swear!).  After this last weekend, I have a lot of stories to tell.  But the first one takes place about a year ago.  It is the day I broke up with running.  I thought I just couldn't do it.  I love if you'd read it again today as it goes with the post tomorrow.

Habitat for Humanity and a Dear John Letter

Dear Running,

As trite as it may sound sound, it's not you, it's me.  I'm just not that into you.  My friends and family tell me how good you are for me.  They tell me how they've fallen in love and want the same for me.  "Just stick with it, it gets better over time."  "Run and then you can eat what you want."  "Trust me, you'll  become addicted."  I feel like I've given it my best shot and it's just not working.

When we first met in  2009, I just wanted to prove I could snag you.  I wanted to take you home to my family on Thanksgiving, so I signed up for the Turkey Trot.  You and I saw each other a few times a week for a couple of months and I felt we were ready for this next step.  And we were.  I ran that 5K better than I thought I could, I beat a friend that I was sure would beat me, when I felt like walking at the end a lady in turkey hat cheered me on.  Sure, a few of my sixth grade students left me in the dust, but I think they just wanted to be at the finish line to cheer us on.  When I crossed the finish line, I had a few tears in my eyes.  I did it.  I proved I could.  That was enough.

We took a break for awhile after that.  When the 2010 Turkey Trot came around, I couldn't show my face at Thanksgiving without you so I signed up again.  We hadn't seen each other in awhile, but I surprisingly finished with a good time.  But a few days later another man asked for my hand and I left you for him and kettlebells.

But now, there is one more event we need to show up together at.  The Rally in Valley on May 12th benefits Habitat for Humanity here in Montgomery County.  Our friends are organizing it, the whole community will be there, and for one last time we need to make an appearance.  I know I've been ignoring you lately and three days of training probably isn't enough.  But hopefully you'll be kind enough to allow me to save face and cross the finish line.  I'm not sure if we'll see each other again after that.  Sure, we'll try to be friends, you'll show up in my work out from time to time, but the pressure of multiple miles with other people watching? I just don't think I can do it anymore.  It's not you, dear running, it's me.

Love always,

Kelly

WIP It UP Wednesday - Mike's Marriage Scarf

See this man...

At Jeff and Jen's Wedding!

Not only is he dashingly handsome and ridiculously funny, he is also patient. Extremely, incredibly, exceedingly patient.

We've spent many years together and he's seen a whole range of my crazy crafting projects. He doesn't complain that I leave the glue gun under the dinning room table for easy access.  He turns a blind eye to the corner of our living room overflowing with yarn.  He doesn't bat an eye when I go into the bathroom for natural reasons and come back out having changed the shower curtain, bathmat, and towels and started taping the walls for new paint.   And best of all, he doesn't mind when I ask him to drive places so that I can knit (I get out of driving lots of places this way!)  It may sound weird but I made about $50 crocheting St. Patrick's Day hats while Mike drove us out to Rochester and back to see my sister.  He drives and I knit the gas money, this is what makes a strong marriage people...take notes.

 Anyway....
After so many years of being together, so many miles driven together and so many projects on and off my needles, I'd still never made anything for Mike.  This came up in conversation one day and I admitted that I really never thought he wanted anything.  Turns out, he did. We came to the agreement that a scarf would be nice and that we'd pick out a coat to go with it afterward.

That was 2010 my friends...I had to check the date on the magazine I got the pattern from to be sure.     We weren't married, probably weren't even engaged.  And yes, he still doesn't have a coat.  He's the guy shoveling snow is a sweatshirt, who is still not cold.

That is Inauguration Weekend 2013...it was VERY cold and that's just a hoodie

Two weeks ago I picked up the project bag (out of the corner of yarn) and got back to work.  And I'm so close...so very close.

Just have to finish the red and black part...

So this week's Work In Progress is Mike's Good Time Marriage Scarf.   Sure it took awhile, the stripes don't always match up and it curls a bit around the edges, but it's made with patience, perseverance, a whole lot of laughter and a whole lot of love.  Kinda like our marriage : )

WIP it Up: What I've Been Up To

I guess this blog is a WIP so I'm happy to give you this little update...

I love writing.  I started this blog in hopes of becoming more disciplined in it.  I thought if I made up themed days of the week I'd write more consistently.  Mentor Monday, Soapbox Saturday/Sunday but I haven't stuck to that.  I thought having themes in general like WIP it Up or Local Flavor would give me direction.  Thing is, I dislike discipline and I'm terrible at directions.  Truth is, I write when I feel inspired, when I have time, when I have something meaningful to say.

I have something meaningful to say, but I'm avoiding saying it.  I working on it and will show you soon.  Have news but not the news that most people expect (ie the news that a crying, pooping, spitting up mini human is moving in).  Stay tuned and I'll let you know.

What I have up to is creating hats for my friend's and family's crying, pooping, spitting up bundles of joy.  I feature them over at a different blog called Pumpkin Head Knits.   Below are pictures from that.  Right now I am working on Christmas hats.  If you see some cuteness you can't live without, shoot my an email with you order.  I am having fun and love the excuse of watching TV marathons while "working" on my hats.

Thanks for sticking with me, I'll be back soon : ) Until then, enjoy all this cuteness...

The Pinterest Challenge - Summer Edition

Raise your hand if you have tons of Pinterest boards with projects that you'll never do...come on raise 'em high cause you know you do.  Some crafty bloggers decided to make a Pinterest event challenging people to ACTUALLY do a project off off their board. The Centsational Girl is where I found this project.

Presenting the Summer time Pinterest Challenge.
 Print

I chose something pretty simple that I wanted to do for a while and that I could use this summer and give as gifts.  This challenge, of course, was not without its challenges.  This is probably why our boards stay uncompleted.  Turns out that my "to make" board disappeared, so when I tried to go back to put the links on here, I couldn't find them.  I'm a bit worried about this as I had some great projects on here, but I'm sure they will cycle through again as all things on Pinterest do.

I chose two different flip flops, the first one linked below and the other one just based on browsing.

May Arts Blog
ribbon challenge

But used the tutorial on Skip to My Lou  to figure out the braiding:

http://www.skiptomylou.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/braided-headband-6.jpg

I made these adorable bands:

And then ran out of ribbon...hence the challenge.  These band will be lonely until I can go to the Michael's an hour away for their partners as our Michael's must be the step-child of Michael's containing much less inventory.

Any way, with a FULL 10 feet of ribbon I   started a new pink polka dot pair...

And attempted to move on to a little more wild zebra pair (flowers made months ago)

What I learned was hot glue could save the world and Gorilla Glue is not appropriate for crafts:

Success:

Fail:

Look at that gross foam!!!  Gonna try this again.

Well, live and learn....Thanks to the Centsational Girl for hosting this!

WIP it Up: Baby Blanket

I want to add a little knitting flavor to this blog.  I recently changed the tag at the top to "A complicated girl living the simple life."  I've changed this tag a gazillion times at this point because, like I said, I am a complicated girl.  Hopefully this one will stick, but if it doesn't, who cares.

So my current work in progress on the knitting front is for my dear friend Jen who is expecting her second child and first girl this fall!  Most of my friends are having boys which is great and all but handmade gifts seem to be better for girls.  I am getting an early start so that I can make lots and lots of cute stuff for this future cutie!

When I found this pattern on the blog Knit 1 LA  I fell in love because is was so pretty, so simple and a very manageable size.  My mother and I typically make bigger blankets for babies and they just take forever.  My sister recently showed us a beautiful leaf patterned one she knitted that was just big enough to wrap around the baby.  That little sis is pretty smart some times!
From K1 LA
Baby Iselle's Blanket  is the same idea, beautiful pattern, nice yarn, manageable size.  I picked up some pretty pink Lion Brand "Baby's First" yarn at Michael's and got to work.  It is a soft cotton and a number 5 bulky weight so it is whipping up quickly.  A nine row repeating pattern, a car ride from Utica, and some jury duty helped me make the progress you can see below.

Here is my WIP:

A few more lunch hours and episodes of "Hatfields and McCoys" and this little blanket will be all set.

The next thing to decide is the edge...should I go green or possibly brown or cream?  Maybe I should ask the Momma to be....Jen what do you think?
